1.24.2011

So we are just about one month into the New Year. I can hardly believe it actually.

But, believe it or not, Christopher and i did in fact, sit down, uninterrupted and write out our 2011 goals. I just haven't talked all that much about them here. Not sure how much i will either. As they happen maybe? We shall see.

Anyway, one of them is to get registered actually. I feel like we are in "the zone" of being matched. The national domestic adoption wait time is 18 months, our agency average in 2008 was 5-14 months. (We signed on in 2009, so we were given the 08 statistic). So, at 15 months, we feel like we just want to get it done. I know all hell is going to break loose if we have to up and leave and travel and trying to get settled, etc. At least if we take care of it now, we have time to think and concentrate and do it the right way.

I am also looking for advice. We have the entire nursery pretty much set. With the exception of the interior of the closet, we are all set. So, in my eyes, we don't need that much - which is the thought behind registering at myregistry.com. I feel like there are a handful of things at various places and this way, we can add what we want in one spot.

Also, in addition to our stroller, an extra pack and play for my office, the carseats and bases and our video monitor, what else should i be registering for?

I can't breastfeed, so no pump needed. I am just going to try a few bottles? Rumor has it our baby might be finicky about them. i can't stop up on formula, so what else is there?

We are heavily leaning towards cloth diapers, so i feel like this is something we could register for. Otherwise, i'm utterly overwhelmed and let me tell you, i perseverate over pretty much everything. So this could be a process.

Any advice would be great! Thank you!

OMG, how exciting!!!

i hear there are some great cloth diaper covers you can register for. [g-baby, bum genius...do those sound familiar?]

i'd get a sophie the giraffe, aden+anais blankets, lots of onesies, extra cloth diapers to use as burp cloths to protect your clothes...i'm sure there's more that i loved that i can't remember now, but really, as long as your babe is dry, warm and fed, it'll be all good!

xo

we also are still using our *sleep sheep* to this day and my son is 25 months old!

Cloth diapers to use as changing pads or burp cloths - we really like the Gerber prefold 3-ply.

If you're going with bottles get enough that you can make it through an entire day and wash all at once and restock for the next day. Twelve is a magic number. A basket to go in the dishwasher to clean/sterilize pacis/nipples and then a spinning rack to dry bottles on the counter. The pacis they like are the soothies.

Diaper caddies for every room you "live" in. We have one in our bedroom, one in the nursery and one in the living room. This way we don't have to walk to the nursery every time we need to change a diaper (which is too many times a day). I've heard great things about the bumGenius cloth diapers.

Our peanuts love the swing. Only Ryan likes the bouncer so far. Reese isn't sure what to make of it still.

Receiving blankets work well as swaddlers for newborns, other people like the swaddle me's or miracle blankets. We haven't used those yet, but have them on hand.

Pajama sleepers - sometimes called sleep sacks. They are 0-9 months. We put the kids in them over their onesies to help keep them warm around the house and at night I swaddle them right over the sleeper to keep them warm. Reese will sleep 6 hours a clip now that she's snuggly and warm.

A good diaper bag too! That's pretty much all we use day in and day out right now.

I actually read your post on my iphone last night via reader and went to bed thinking about baby supplies that we use (used) on a daily basis. LOL!
Here are some items that we used a lot:

Boppy Lounger -- This is different from the normal boppy and we loved using it. She enjoyed laying on it and looking around the room.

Changing pad covers (2-3)
Sheets (3-4)
Sheet protector (1-2)
Box of disposable changing pad covers (for diaper bag and gross public changing tables)

Fisher Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse -- could not survive without this! She loves to go to sleep with the music and the light.

If you cloth diaper, I suggest trying a variety of types before you buy a bunch of one kind. For the newborn stage, Kissaluvs were my favorite with thristies covers. Also, I love the Imse Vimse Flushable Liners (amazon). Don't forget 1-2 diaper pail liners. I like the Planet Wise liners.

SwaddleMe (3-4) -- We used receiving blankets at first and then when she started escaping from those we switched to swaddleme. They work great.

AngelCare Monitor -- Loved knowing that it would alarm us if it didn't detect her breathing. I also love that it tells us the temp in her room.

Books, books, books! -- We spend a lot of time reading and she loves turning the pages of board books. At this point she can entertain herself for quite awhile just sitting on the floor and "reading" by herself.

Washcloths -- I thought I had too many. You can never have too many. We use them with every meal to clean hands and face.

Inflatable bathtub -- We got the duck from Target once she outgrew the baby tub. It's a nice transition without going straight to the big tub. I like it because she tries to stand and then plops down and she's in a soft surface.

Sophie the giraffe -- This was her BFF until just recently!

Bumbo -- we probably could have done without it, but it did come in handy on occasion.

Feeding bowls, spoons, sippy cups -- It will be nice to have on hand for later.

Bibs! -- some parents don't use them at the infant stage, but we did. She was a big drooler/spitter up'er. ;) I preferred changing the bib vs the whole outfit.

Ok, I'll stop now...

Exciting! As a newbie mom (meaning I litterally had 24 hours to get everything for our -- at the time -- 2 1/2 month old Foster Son). Uhhh.. at of the "NECESSITIES" aren't. I reccomend AT LEAST 20 bottles (I really like the 9 oz AVENT bottles.. their shape and size, because at 7 months the baby was capable of holding it himself, while in my arms or on a boppy). I have a list of the stuff that I WANTED, on my blog under the "Hurlding for Family" page tab.

So exciting! Here are some of the things that we have found very useful:

Swaddlemes were great once the he would not keep wrapped up in the receiving blankets. I might get some Aden and Anais blankets this time around, as it will be summer and the Swaddlemes might be a little toasty for some nights. Gowns are really nice in the beginning for sleep for easy diaper changes. Even our little boy wore them in blue :)

Cloth diapers as burp cloths. We cloth diaper, but use a diaper service, which has been really nice.

We have the FP Seahorse and Sophie and both were loved. You cannot have enough books.

Washcloths and hooded towels, and maybe whatever toiletry line you want to go with. We got an infant tub with sling for when he was a newborn.

Couple of extra changing pad covers and pack in play sheets.

Playmat (a definite must) and we got a Bouncy Seat. Evan never really likes the swing.

Disposable changing pads, pacifier wipes, formula dispenser for diaper bag (so much better than lugging the whole can around)

You can't get enough bottles. We got the SkipBo bottle drying rack, which is nice because it does not take up too much counter space.

Bibs, pacifiers, nail clippers/scissors, Infant tylenol/motrin, nasal aspirator

We got the Fisher Price Space Saver high chair, which has been great, because it is so portable and fits on a regular dining room chair.

We used our bottle warmer a lot, it beat waiting for a bowl of water to warm up a bottle in the middle of the night for a hungry baby.

Feel free to e-mail me anytime with any other questions :)

I'm excited to get moving on this!

My husband and I used Myregistry.com for our baby registry and loved it. Adding items from any online store made everything very easy and fun! Congratulations!

Swaddle Me blankets (or something like that)

a cradle swing - this is similar to the one we used: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4214708&fromWidget=BRU%3ACategory%3ATop+Sellers (It was great! She slept in it a lot for little naps.)

a fisher price seahorse (it plays music and lights up) http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3508447

We liked playtex bottles with the plastic inserts

solid color onesies (for layering)

bibs with snaps (not ties)

Soothie brand pacifiers (the hospital used this and gave us some...she liked them until she was 4 months old and decided she was done with them!)

Jump and Jive Doorway jumper if you have a doorway where you could use it. It's by Graco and as they jump, their feet hit the pad below and it plays music: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3812910

Sleep sacks -- so great - make changing diapers during the night very easy.

Sleepers with zippers -- no snaps!

A boppy and an extra cover for when your first cover is in the wash.

Extra crib sheets and flannel pads for the crib and the changing pad

A changing pad/cover

The duck tub -- Zoe loved this!

High chair and travel high chair

Car seats (I think you mentioned this)

Maybe a fabric carrier if you want to go for walks (I have a mei tai that I ordered on Etsy)

Stroller and umbrella stroller

A cute diaper bag (but you probably already have that!!!)

Have fun, Rebecca!!! :)

A moby or sleepy wrap. It's a great way to bond with your baby and it actually keeps your hands free so that you can get things done.

2 formula dispensers one for diaper bag and one for middle of the night bottles.

lap pads--to protect the crib sheet so you don't have to change it every day

We also did this (registered before baby came) and it was a life saver. We only got 24 hours notice and in the stress of the moment it was so easy to go in and just purchase the things we needed right away. It was also convenient for the million phone calls that we got from people who wanted to get us something. I just sent them to our registry. I also registered for both boy and girl items and then once I knew we were getting a girl easily deleted the boy items from our registry.

Hope that helps!

Wow that is so exciting! I don't have any children though, so I can't offer you any advice. :(

I believe Amazon.com has a feature now where you can add anything from any site to their registry.

And for cloth diapers, there is Sonrise Diaper service, if you are interested in a service.

Been thinking of you lately and wishing you the very best :)
